Rodrigo y Gabriela at the Showbox

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Another exciting show is coming up soon! Rodrigo y Gabriela are playing at The Showbox April 24th. I will definitely be going! I will be looking for tickets since they are apparently sold out. Please contact me if you have tickets and want to get rid of them.

I sat trying to figure out how to best describe them and the best I can come up with is a mix between Latin rhythms, classical music, and rock. Their covers of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and Metallica’s “Orion” are worth a listen, but I personally find their own tracks more exciting.

Self-Made Man

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Inspired by Jamie’s entry on gender and conversation I thought I’d share some thoughts on a book I recently read called Self-Made Man: One Woman’s Journey into Manhood and Back.

Norah Vincent, the book’s author and a journalist for the L.A. Times, spends 18 months as a man and writes about her experience. (more…)

Matisyahu

MatisyahuFor those of out there who have never heard of Matisyahu, I highly recommend him. I just finished listening to Live At Stubbs and all I have to say is that it is amazing. Think uplifting, soulful, and thoughtful reggae and you’ll be halfway there. Not only is he a talented reggae artist, he’s a Hasidic Jew with some serious vocals and beat-boxing skills… yeah… beat-boxing skills. Make sure to check out tracks 5 (King Without a Crown) and 7 (Beat Box).

About Schmidt

About Schmidt Cover

Yesterday I stopped by an old friend’s house and watched About Schmidt. I didn’t know too much about the movie other than I had heard it wasn’t that funny and it was actually kind of depressing. Unphased by these comments, I decided to watch the movie anyway.

Reflekt feat. Deline Bass - Need to Feel Loved

Found this track on a recent Paul Van Dyk set from DjMixes. The tracklisting says the version PVD plays is the club mix, but it sounds a little different to me. Not too much to say about this one other than it comes highly recommended. This is another progressive trance track with a female vocal - guess I’m becoming a sucker for seductive female vocals.

Flash Brothers - Amen (Lys & Gigi S extended remix)

This is one of those tracks I have been putting on repeat and listening to since it was released two months ago. I first heard it while listening to a live broadcast of Sander Kleinenberg spinning at Sensation White in Amsterdam (07/03/2004). It was the second to last track played and as soon as I heard it my ears stood up like a dog who hears the mail man coming. After some serious searching and a bit of a wait I was able to find it. Six months later I’m still listening to it and enjoying it just as much as the first time.

Garden State

Cover

Garden State is one of those movies where after it ends you think to yourself, “damn, I wish they made more movies like that.”

Largeman, played by Zach Braff, comes back to his home town for the funeral of his quadriplegic mother. Leaving the antidepressants his father prescribes him at home, he slowly comes out of the foggy numbness that is the last 10+ years of his life. Over the course of a few days Largeman begins to figure out who he is and what it’s like to feel life.

I really enjoyed the characters and dialog in this movie. After Largeman meets Sam, played by Natalie Portman, he really begins to open up and the dialog between the two of them is fantastic. Although Sam quiets down after the first half of the movie, I still really enjoyed Largeman’s “conversations” with Sam. I say “conversations” because many of them are just Largeman talking to Sam, almost like we are hearing his inner dialog. Through these conversations we really begin to understand the depth of these characters and why they are the way they are.

Napoleon Dynamite Cover

I have just finished watching Napoleon Dynamite and I felt compelled to write a little something about it. For those of you who have never heard of this movie, Napoleon Dynamite is the main character and a super geek. (more…)

Condor II - You Can (Kiss My) (Light Of Day Mix)

Found this gem at the very end of a recent Paul Van Dyk set (live at powerzone 08-21-04). Looked it up and sure enough, was released back in 2000. Shoulda guessed, because they don’t make tracks like this anymore.

Clean bumpin’ bassline with great piano melody. Highly recommended!
